The technician will look at insulation levels in your attic and basement/crawlspace, take count of lightbulbs and appliances, and perform diagnostic tests on your house.

  • Solarize Virginia is a nonprofit program run by LEAP (Local Energy Alliance Program) that makes going solar easy and more affordable for homeowners and small businesses. Solarize Virginia works with local governments and nonprofit partners throughout Virginia to connect program participants with discounted pricing from vetted installers.

  • Streamlined Process

LEAP simplifies converting to solar. We perform a free satellite assessment to determine if solar is viable for your home. Then we connect you with a vetted installer so you can be confident you’re working with a reputable firm.

    Discounted Rates

As part of the competitive bidding process, Solarize-affiliated installers agree to offer discounted rates, typically at least 10% lower than the average for your area.

    Expert Advice

LEAP’s solar experts are here to help you through the process. You can attend one of our informational sessions, reach out with questions, and come to us with customer service concerns.

  • If you have a south-facing roof that gets plenty of sunlight, then your home is likely solar viable. East/west can work as well, but not all orientations will be viable.

If you sign up for Solarize, LEAP will perform a free satellite assessment on your property. LEAP takes other factors into account including the age and size of your roof and your home’s overall energy efficiency. Solar installers will conduct further tests for structural soundness and other details.

  • In 2014, the Virginia House of Delegates passed legislation stating that an HOA may not outright restrict the installation of a solar power system, but they are entitled to “reasonable restrictions” such as size, place, and manner of placement. An educational report released in June 2020 by LEAP and ReisingerGooch explains how Virginia’s new law has significantly expanded the rights of homeowners who want to install and use solar energy. The report provides homeowners and HOAs with guidance on Virginia’s solar laws as they evaluate new residential rooftop solar installations. As a part of Solarize, LEAP and ReisingerGooch will be providing legal guidance to all homeowners facing HOA challenges.

Receiving an Assessment or Services

  • At a minimum, change your air filter when you adjust your clocks for daylight savings time, which occurs twice a year. If you have pets or multiple occupants in the house, consider changing the filter every three months. When you replace the filter, inspect the amount of build-up and adjust your schedule accordingly. If the filter is heavily soiled, change it more frequently. If it still looks relatively clean, you can extend the interval until the next change. Adjust based on the condition of the filter during each replacement.

  • The blower door simulates a windy day in the house. A fan will draw air out of the house, and air comes into the house through any gaps or cracks. The computer uses this information to calculate the house’s total leakage.

  • During a CAZ (Combustion Appliance Zone) test, an auditor aims to depressurize the house to its maximum extent to ensure that combustion appliances are drafting properly. This test is to determine if a homeowner could inadvertently cause combustion appliances to backdraft, potentially bringing combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide into the living space.

  • A smart fan switch operates like a regular switch but includes programmable timer features. This allows the fan to turn on for a specified duration each hour. Additionally, a delay timer can be set to keep the fan running for a designated period after the switch is turned off.

  • Ensuring health and safety is a priority. Testing combustion appliances allows us to assess their efficiency and functionality. If an appliance is not working properly, proceeding with home improvements could exacerbate existing issues.

  • Installing a bath fan is important in bathrooms where showers or baths generate significant moisture. This fan helps remove moisture from the home. Without a bath fan, there is a risk of mold or mildew buildup, which can degrade indoor air quality.
