Solarize NoVA Reaches 1 Megawatt of New Solar

(June 6, 2017 – Fairfax, Virginia) The Solarize NoVA campaign, a partnership between the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) and the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP), reached a significant milestone with the contract total of 1 MegaWatt of new solar. The Solarize NoVA program first launched in the fall of 2014 and currently has a campaign covering Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax, the City of Falls Church, and the Town of Vienna that ends June 30th.

Over the past three years, more than 4,000 home and business owners have signed up expressing an interest in the program, and 131 have entered into contracts. To date, the rated power of these new solar contracts is 1.002 MW – the equivalent of eliminating 2 million pounds of CO2 per year – with a construction value of over $3.3 million. This total represents 5% of installed residential solar statewide.

“Solarize NoVA has been a significant success providing residents and business owners the opportunity to go solar at reduced prices,” said NVRC Chairman and Town of Vienna Mayor, Laurie R. DiRocco. “We are proud of these efforts working with our partners at LEAP, local government colleagues, the Piedmont Environmental Council, and the installers. NVRC through this program is helping property owners voluntarily reduce their carbon footprint and support a growing solar industry in the region.“

To further assist home and business owners considering solar, NVRC created the first regional map in Virginia to help property owners see how a solar system may fit on their home/building and to estimate the associated dollar value of the energy savings created. This solar map is a free online tool and can be found at www.novasolarmap.com.

“The Solarize NoVA program reduces today’s low solar prices even more, and then our staff supports the consumer through the whole process,” said LEAP Executive Director, Andrew Grigsby. “For many participants, it’s a life-long dream come true. America’s clean energy future is happening quickly. Thanks to NVRC and all of our partners who recognize this and are helping speed solar’s adoption right here in Northern Virginia.”
