The Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) announced today the winners of the Northern Virginia Home Energy Makeover Contest. The contest proved an over-whelming success by reaching over 1,500 local residents in the Northern Virginia region. This promotional event culminated with a series of “surprise” announcements as the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) congratulates each winner in their home this Thursday.
LEAP, a non-profit organization committed to energy efficiency, held the contest as a vehicle for increasing homeowners’ energy awareness by educating them on how their home uses energy. In addition to LEAP, other official partners include local governments and financing institutions, such as Arlington County, Alexandria, Arlington Community Federal Credit Union, and Commonwealth One Federal Credit Union. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission is also assisting LEAP in promoting the contest, along with support from The Dominion Foundation and the State Corporation Commission’s Virginia Energy Sense campaign.
In addition to the three winning makeovers, the contest offered a wide assortment of additional prizes to encourage energy awareness. First, each entrant received an online energy report on their home, which provided them valuable information on how their home uses energy. Next, each week a random winner was chosen to receive a free in-home energy assessment, valued at five hundred dollars. Lastly, the ten finalists of the contest all received a complimentary in-home energy assessment as well. These supplementary prizes further bolster LEAP’s commitment to spreading awareness and stimulating action related to energy efficiency in the home. Here is what people are saying about the contest:
“The NOVA Home Energy Makeover Contest was a great opportunity for northern Virginia communities to learn about energy efficiency as a means to improving the comfort, affordability, and health and safety of our homes. We are very excited to congratulate the winners and move onto the next step – making the energy improvements,” said Cynthia Adams, Executive Director of the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP).
“Dominion is pleased to help northern Virginia residents find ways to use energy wisely and save money while remaining comfortable in their homes,” said Ken Barker, vice president of customer solutions and energy conservation for Dominion Virginia Power. The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources, of which Dominion Virginia Power is a subsidiary. Foundation grants are funded by shareholder dollars and are not borne by customers.
“Our goal is help our members make financing home energy improvement projects affordable” said Jim Wilmot, Vice President of Lending with Arlington Community Federal Credit Union.
“Energy efficiency is an investment in Arlington’s future with tangible benefits today for both homeowners and the community. We are delighted to be part of this innovative contest,” said Jeff Harn, who heads Arlington County’s Office of Sustainability and Environmental Management.
“We are happy to be a part of the Northern Virginia Home Energy Makeover Contest,” said Shane Cochrane, Division Chief for Alexandria’s Office of Housing. “Installing Energy Star certified products is just one important way to lessen your home’s energy use, and we hope this contest will help our residents learn more about the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program.”
“This contest is a great opportunity for homeowners to make big improvements to their home and utility bills,” said Mark Gibb, Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission. “We encourage all Northern Virginia residents to participate.”
