Solarize Alexandria and Solarize Dumfries Open September 7th through November 10th

Deals for Homeowners to Add Rooftop Solar at Reduced Costs

Alexandria and Dumfries, Virginia – Beginning September 7th and running through November 10th, solar power will be more convenient and affordable than ever for area residents thanks to Solarize Alexandria and Solarize Dumfries, part of the innovative Solarize NOVA campaign that offers bulk purchasing discounts and free solar site assessments. The program is run by the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) in partnership with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC), the City of Alexandria and the Town of Dumfries.

LEAP has executed successful Solarize programs in Charlottesville, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Herndon, Leesburg/Loudoun, Nelson County, Vienna, and the 9-County territory served by the Piedmont Environmental Council. The program makes going solar simple and affordable. It allows participants to learn more about solar options specific to their homes and take advantage of a streamlined installation and financing process. With the 30% federal tax credit set to expire at the end of 2016, this could be the last, best opportunity to go solar.

To date 1,300 Northern Virginia homeowners have applied to the Solarize NOVA program with 29 (and counting) contracts signed totaling 212 kW electricity and valued at more than $750,000.

Area residents interested in learning more about their solar and reduced rate financing options can go online and sign-up for free to be a part of the program today! Join now at www.solarizealexandria.org or www.solarizedumfries.org.

Dumfries residents can take advantage of our unique solar map online at http://arcg.is/1Mopb9h. It shows the basic solar potential – roof size, usable space and size system the roof could accommodate — for all roofs in Dumfries that qualify for the Solarize program.

LEAP will be offering a series of Solarize Alexandria and Dumfries information sessions for those interested to hear from solar professionals, past program participants, and financing advisors.

September 22 and October 26 at the Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library in Alexandria.

Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille
“I am very excited to see SolarizeAlexandria launch in our community. Solar power can provide energy cost savings to homeowners and enhance their homes’ quality and value, while helping meet our Eco-City Alexandria goals such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Mayor Gerald “Jerry” Foeman, Town of Dumfries
“I am happy to support Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) and proud of Solarize Dumfries. The Solarize model has been very successful nationwide in lowering the barriers to the adoption of solar power. This is an exciting opportunity for our residents and business owners to support our local economy, provide cost savings for taxpayers and protect our environment by reducing emissions through solar energy.”

Hon. Penny Gross, Chairman, Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC)
“Northern Virginia has been and is our Commonwealth’s ‘Innovation Region.’ Solarize NOVA is an innovative program to help make renewable energy more accessible to our citizens and business community. I am delighted we are able to expand this program with our neighbors in Alexandria and Dumfries and eventually move it forward to all of Northern Virginia.”

Andrew Grigsby, Interim Executive Director, LEAP
“LEAP is excited to bring our wildly popular Solarize program to Alexandria and Dumfries. We’ve seen a surge in interest across Virgina by homeowners who are motivated by the discounted prices and who know that our clean energy future starts with their roof. Summer might be over, but there is plenty of time for Alexandria and Dumfries homeowners to soak up the sun and soak up the savings with Solarize.”

Mark Gibb, Executive Director, Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC)
“Solarize NOVA is part of a 1,000 rooftop challenge in Northern Virginia. In 2011, the NVRC adopted a regional energy strategy that calls for NVRC to help facilitate aggregated procurement of renewable energy technologies. This program helps bring reduced cost solar systems to our residents and business community utilizing local installers. A win-win for all.”

Easy- Homeowners and businesses in Alexandria and Dumfries can get started with a simple online application and take advantage of free or discounted energy efficiency consultations and a free solar site assessment. Participants will be asked to sign a Letter of Intent if they meet pre-qualification standards.

Affordable- A key aspect of this grassroots effort is community participation. When community residents rally behind solar, local installers are able to offer lower prices to Solarize participants through bulk purchasing, reduced travel, and offset marketing costs. Prices are expected to be discounted 15-18% .

More Savings- In addition to Solarize bulk purchasing discounts, LEAP will help participants access a 30% federal tax credit (set to expire in the end of 2016) and navigate the Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) market.

Smart- The Energy Information Administration projects a 2% annual rise in residential energy rates for the Mid-Atlantic. Solar customers regularly see an 8% or better return on investment.

Proven- Over the past year LEAP’s Solarize campaigns across the Commonwealth have seen 150 and counting Virginia homeowners and businesses sign contracts for solar panels for their roofs.
