In families where the parents bear the burden of paying the utility bills, children aren’t usually the ones taking the initiative to lower those bills. But Caitlin Lundquist of Reston did that and more when she signed her family up for a Home Energy Check-Up as part of the Reenergize Reston Community Challenge. Not only did the Lundquists get tons of great energy-saving and healthy home tips, but they won a new ENERGY STAR heating and cooling system (valued at $8,000) in a contest sponsored by LEAP, Reston Association, M.E. Flow and Rheem.
In Their Own Words
“I can hardly say enough great things about the Home Energy Check-Up program by LEAP. When I heard about the Re-energize Reston campaign, I was excited to sign up because I am concerned about the environmental impacts of our energy consumption. After the Check-Up we were very optimistic about both large and small steps we can take to consume less energy.
In addition to offering tips to save energy and money right away, the Check-Up helped us prioritize numerous home improvement needs. The appointment was easy to schedule and Shayne, the Energy Coach, was prompt and professional. During his walkthrough, he noticed that our radon re-mediator was broken and could be causing an unhealthy living space. This got fixed right away and we now have a list of next steps for making our house as safe and efficient as possible. He also provided non-biased advice on which energy-saving projects would pay off fastest and be the best investments in our situation. For example, he suggested upgrading the insulation in our attic before getting new windows. Meanwhile, smaller efficiency tricks we learned from the audit have already been implemented, saving money and conserving energy every day since.
And a big, surprise bonus: Signing up for the Check-Up entered us into a contest for a free new HVAC unit and we were absolutely thrilled to recently have learned that we won!! This amazing news came as our AC unit teeters on its very last leg. We are extremely thankful for the generosity of LEAP and Re-energize Reston and for everything they do for our community.” – Caitlin Lundquist
