BEFORE THE FLOOD
Sponsor’s Guide

EVENT OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The Local Energy Alliance Program will be hosting a special event at the Paramount Theater about climate change where our community members have the opportunity to:

  • Watch a free screening of National Geographic’s Before the Flood featuring environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace, Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Speak with our panel of local and national experts from NASA Langley, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Southern Environmental Law Center, and LEAP
  • Meet local, state, national, and international organizations that offer climate solutions
  • Get information about what individuals can do to fight climate change

Before the Flood’s message is simple. Climate change is real and the impacts are devastating, but there are actions that each of us can take in our homes, workplaces, and daily lives right now that will fight climate change and advance smart, clean energy solutions. This message is what Charlottesville’s Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) would like to share with our guests at this special community event. This event is more than a movie. It’s a chance for everyone to have an impact on climate change.

WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?

We have significant costs associated with this event. These costs include a rental fee at the Paramount, event staffing fees, equipment fees, marketing fees, cost of promotional items, travel and lodging reimbursement for panel speakers, and hors d’oeuvres and beverages for guests. As a nonprofit, we make every effort to keep these expenses to a minimum. We need the support of sponsors to be able to offer this event free to the entire community and expose a broad audience to climate change science and solutions. All donations are completely tax-deductible as we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

SPONSORSHIP LEVELS AND BENEFITS

The Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers are broadly recognized as a national treasure. We have named our sponsor levels after the major Virginia tributaries as a recognition of the dramatic impact climate change has on the health of one of our state’s most beloved and important natural assets.

Below are each of our sponsorship levels and associated benefits. Comparative benefits are summarized in the table below.

Potomac River Sponsor – $2,000

The Potomac River (mainstem and North Branch) is approximately 405 miles (652 km) long, with a drainage area of about 14,700 square miles (38,000 km2). In terms of area, this makes the Potomac River the fourth largest river along the Atlantic coast of the United States and the 21st largest in the United States. Over 5 million people live within the Potomac watershed.

The river drains an area of 2,848 square miles (7,380 km2), approximately 6% of Virginia. Much of the watershed is rural and forested, but it has experienced increased development in recent decades because of the southward expansion of the Washington, D.C. suburbs.
